Installation Steps Using the CD-ROM

The following steps show you how to install Windows 98 on Computer using a CD-ROM drive. This is a hands-on example that requires about 60 minutes:

  1. Reboot Computer using a Win98 boot disk. Change to the Windows 98 CD-ROM start the Windows 98 setup.exe program.

  2. A routine check of the system is done, followed by the preparation of the Setup Wizard.

  3. The software license appears. After reading it, tab or click the Yes button to continue.

  4. The Setup Wizard appears to start collecting information about your computer. Click Next to continue.

  5. When prompted for a location in which to install Windows 98, take the default, which is C:\WINDOWS. Click Next to continue.

  6. Windows 98 will prepare the directory, check for installed components, and check for available disk space.

  7. If you are upgrading from Windows for Workgroups, you will be asked whether you want to save system files. With these files saved, you could easily uninstall Windows 98 if you wanted to. These files take up approximately 6MB of disk space. If you want to be able to cleanly uninstall Windows 98, as if it were another software application, click the Yes but-ton, and then click Next to continue.

  8. Choose the type of installation. The default is Typical. Click Next to continue.

  9. For User Information, enter your full name and the name of your organization or company. Click Next to continue.

  10. For Product Identification, enter the product key code from the CD-ROM cover. Setup will analyze your computer, searching for all hardware devices available.

  1. If you’re asked whether you want to check for specific hard-ware such as a CD-ROM drive or sound cards, check the appropriate boxes and then click Next to continue.

  2. After hardware detection, you will see the Getting Connected dialog box. Do not select any of these components.

  3. You are prompted to install the default components, as determined by your setup option. Accept the defaults, and click Next to continue.

  4. Verify your network configuration, if prompted. For a stand-alone installation, you will not see these screens.

  5. If asked to identify your computer and workgroup, enter the appropriate information. Ensure that the computer name is unique. Click Next to continue.

  6. When asked whether you want to create a startup disk, accept the default of Yes, I want a startup disk. Click Next to continue.

  7. The Setup Wizard begins copying files to your computer. Click Next to continue.

  8. The copying process might take a while. Put in a startup disk floppy when prompted.

  9. The Setup Wizard reappears to finish the Windows 98 installation on your computer. Click Finish to continue.

  10. Windows 98 starts and prompts you for your name and password. The Control Panel, Start menu, and Help system will be configured.

  11. When prompted for Time Zone, click your approximate location on the world map, which helps select the correct time zone. Click Close to continue.

  12. If you have a printer, ignore this setting and continue.

  13. The Welcome to Windows 98 screen appears. Click the buttons to take both the Windows 98 Tour and to see What’s New in Windows 98.

 

 

The installation is complete.
