Detailed below is a personal evaluation written by Grant Taplin during my time spent assisting ISG.
The TAFE IT 3602 PC Support course Peter is enrolled in, is made up of a number of practical modules. A requirement of one of these modules is that Peter obtains more direct hands on experience within the confines of a PC support team.
As a direct result of this Peter approached the Internal Services Group ISG of Reuters in July 1999 to enquirer if he could join the team for further experience. Discussions were undertaken and details of the working agreement between ISG and Peter were drawn up. The agreement was deemed acceptable and Peter was assigned to me on a casual basis.
Discussions were held with Peter to identify what he needed to get out of this working relationship and how we could best work together to achieve this. One element that was agreed upon for the start was that it would be best if Peter took an active role in the support of the office as opposed to simply observing the work of the team. In this way Peter would achieve a greater understanding of the work done and the team would benefit from an additional pair of hands on the job.
During Peter’s time with ISG he had a number of objectives which he had set out to achieve. These were listed in the Working Contact. I believe these have been met and Peter has gained substantially knowledge from the experience.
This relationship was up held by the professional manor that Peter conducted himself. He was willing to engage himself in all that was required of him and managed successful to complete all the tasks appointed to him.
I know that he would agree with me when I say that the work he has done with the ISG has highlighted the responsibilities and tasks that are undertaken by our team. He has shown that he has gained additional experience in the fields of hardware and software installation, and he understands the need for certain configuration and what is required when undertaking maintenance.
Over the past 2 months we have generally worked together for 7 hours per week. Although this period of work has now met the requirement of Peter’s module the working relationship continues as and when the time allows. As long as it suits the needs of both parties and does not restrict the effective working requirements of the ISG then I see no reason why Peter’s assistance and education need cease.
